Traveling during the school holiday period? This is financially difficult for more than two-thirds of Dutch people. More than half of people also adjust their holiday plans due to inflation, according to a poll by this site. Higher prices at hotels and campsites are a particular problem.

News reporter

This is evident from a poll by the Panelinzicht agency, commissioned by this site. A total of 1,001 people participated in the study.

69 percent of respondents indicated that traveling during the school holidays has become a financial challenge. This feeling is especially prevalent among middle-educated people (74 percent), but students (77 percent) also recognize this.

The culprits are mainly the higher prices at hotels and campsites, according to more than half of those surveyed. According to the Dutch, what also plays a role are rising costs for daily groceries, higher prices for airline tickets and higher costs at the destination itself, for example in the catering industry.

How do Dutch people spend their holiday money?

More than half of Dutch people say that the increased costs are causing them to make different choices for their holiday. Young people in particular are adjusting their holiday plans. For example, about 30 percent of holidaymakers are looking for a cheaper destination. For example, a smaller group (17 percent) goes on holiday closer to home.

What about holiday pay? Only 28 percent of Dutch people spend their holiday allowance entirely on a trip, while about half of those surveyed do so ‘partially’.

Almost a third of people feel that their holiday pay has become slightly less valuable. 41 percent of respondents say they have to contribute a small portion themselves. For just under a third of people, holiday pay only covers a small part of travel costs; they must contribute ‘significantly’ themselves. For only a small group (18 percent) does the money fully cover their holiday costs, or do they even have some left over.

Heat doesn’t always matter

However, there is also a group of people who do not use their holiday pay for a holiday at all, namely around 21 percent of Dutch people. They prefer to use the money (in 65 percent of cases) to save, or for major purchases such as a car (22 percent) or for fixed costs (18 percent).

The sometimes scorching summers abroad mean that people (23 percent) prefer to go on holiday in a cooler period. Although 45 percent of respondents say that warm weather has no influence on their holiday plans.
