On everyone’s lips: What actually is the Metaverse?

• The Metaverse is a new technology whose development is currently being promoted in particular by Meta-CEO (formerly Facebook).

• The physical world is “enriched with fully virtual, three-dimensional experiences and projections,” according to Meta.

• How quickly the Metaverse can be used by the general public and in what form is not yet foreseeable.

“[Das Metaverse] describes a new phase of networked, virtual experiences and possibilities using technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. At its core, it’s about a new kind of presence and proximity in virtual space.”

With these words, the tech giant Meta described its vision of the Metaverse in a press release in mid-October 2021 regarding the creation of 10,000 jobs to contribute to the development of the Metaverse. The company was called Facebook until the end of October 2021 and is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram & Co. The new name is intended to reflect Meta’s dedication and commitment to the development of the Metaverse.

What will the Metaverse look like in the end?

The development of the Metaverse is still in its infancy, so the final functionality of the new technology is not yet known – if there will be a “final” functionality. In the press release on Facebook’s name change to Meta, the company explains: “The Metaverse merges today’s online social experiences with the real world, enriching it with fully virtual, three-dimensional experiences and projections.”

The actual developments of the Metaverse for the next ten years are still being actively discussed.

There are already first drafts of Metas for functionality and design

However, in a founding letter published by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the day Facebook changed its name to Meta, it is clearly stated that there will be various ways of using the virtual world. You can access the Metaverse through three different devices:

With AR glasses to be able to see and perceive the physical world at the same time.
With a VR headset if you want to fully immerse yourself in the Metaverse.
With a smartphone or computer to log in via platforms that already exist today (such as Zoom).

At the Connect 2021 meta-event, Zuckerberg also presented some mockup designs of various applications within the metaverse. The video has been uploaded to YouTube.

The Metaverse is not managed by Meta, but works like the Internet

Although Mark Zuckerberg even renamed his company after the new project, the Metaverse is not controlled and administered by Meta. This is also explained by Meta itself in the press release regarding its 10,000 new hires: “The Metaverse is not something that a single company will own and operate alone. Like the Internet, the Metaverse will be open and interoperable.”

Will the Metaverse soon be intensively integrated into everyone’s everyday life?

It is difficult to predict what role the Metaverse will play in everyone’s everyday life over the next few years – there are several aspects that speak against a rapid integration of the Metaverse into everyone’s everyday life. The Luxiders portal has listed a few of them. VR devices are currently still mostly too bulky and too expensive for everyone to be able to use them regularly, and the Metaverse also consumes a large amount of energy and is therefore very harmful to the environment.

However, Zuckerberg writes in his founding letter that he would like to convince a billion people to use the Metaverse by 2031.
