Sideris Tasiadis is the first German to win two Olympic medals in canoe slalom. Now the 34-year-old became a father.

Sideris Tasiadis posted a photo of his son on Instagram and wrote: “Since Tuesday we have been holding our great happiness in our hands.” The German canoeist and Olympic silver medalist at London 2012 became a father for the first time and shared the happy news with his fans. He also revealed the name of his first child: Lino.

In a statement from the German Canoe Association, the Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo and fourth Olympic medalist in Paris is quoted as saying: “Everything feels really nice. It’s sometimes still indescribable that he is now here with us at home. We I already love him more than anything.” Lino is 53 cm tall and weighed 3,680 grams at birth, as Tasiadis also announced.

Due to fatherhood and time with his son and wife, Tasiadis missed the warm water course in February on the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean. However, the sports star explained: “It’s not a broken leg, because I can train really well here at home.”

The German paracyclist Matthias Schindler commented on Tasiadis’ Instagram post: “Congratulations to you! Enjoy getting to know each other!” Snowboarder Ramona Hofmeister, who won bronze in the parallel giant slalom in Pyeongchang, also commented: “Congratulations to you three.” Luger and three-time Olympic champion Felix Loch was also happy: “Jawoi! Congratulations!”

With his Olympic medals in 2012 and 2021, Tasiadis is the first German to win Olympic medals in canoe slalom twice. In Paris last year, Tasiadis missed a medal in the canoe sculls by just 0.24 seconds. Afterwards, the canoeist said: “If I take Rio with fifth place and say that was my worst placement, then fourth place in the fourth Games is already strong.” Tasiadis already knew at the Games that he would be a father and explained: “It’s going to be a boy, that’s worth a gold medal.”
