Olympic heroine ends career

Soccer Olympic champion Babett Peter ends her successful career. “An unforgettable journey comes to an end for me this summer,” wrote the Real Madrid captain on Instagram.

She looks back “with pride on what I have achieved”, said Peter, and “thanks to football that I was able to realize and live all my dreams”.

The 33-year-old wants to finish her master’s degree in sports business in October and then plans to work in US women’s soccer. Her partner, with whom she has a son, already lives there.

Her wish is to help shape women’s football “at management level” in this country in a few years.

Peter played 118 international matches and, in addition to Olympic gold in 2016, also won the World Cup (2007) and European Championship (2009). With Potsdam she won the Champions League title in 2010, with Turbine, 1. FFC Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg she was German champion eight times and won the cup seven times.

“What really sticks are the great people I’ve met through football,” said the defender. This also includes the former Wolfsburg resident Ella Masar, to whom Peter is engaged.
