Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, will be split into two sides – like an LP or cassette – perhaps reflecting the moods of the music. The first side, “Girl So in Love,” contains seven songs, while the back, “You Seem Pretty Sad,” carries six. It remains to be seen whether there is a deeper conceptual meaning behind the naming of the pages. when the album drops on June 12th.
Rodrigo posted the news on Instagram on Tuesday. In the accompanying photo, she’s wearing a pink babydoll dress and – of course – looking a little sad (or perhaps pensive) as she reaches for a child’s swing in the dark. Both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung would probably agree: If Rodrigo had dreamed this image, she could unconsciously have the wish that her wishes would come true – and anyone who knows her two previous albums knows that anyway.
She announced the album, the cover of which shows her flipping over on a swing during the day, in April. She has since released the singles “Drop Dead” and “The Cure.” She once again worked with her long-time collaborator Dan Nigro. “Dan is just a genius,” Rodrigo told Zane Lowe. “He knows me so well, knows my writing style and my artistic direction. I can just bring him a song and he has this innate ability to say, ‘Oh, this song is good because of this. Let’s work that out in the song.'”
Sad love songs
She said about the album itself that it contains “sad love songs”. “I realized that all of my favorite romantic songs were so beautiful because they had a hint of fear or longing in them,” she told British Vogue.
