Olivia Rodrigo languishes on “Drop Dead” – the lead single from her highly anticipated album, You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love.
“Drop Dead” opens with fluttering synths as Rodrigo sings, “I know that the bar closes at 11/I hope you never finish that beer.” She references her recent collaborator Robert Smith and quotes The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” (“You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’/And I know why he wrote them now that you’re standing right here”) before the song explodes into beatific lines about falling in love with a guy from the internet.
In the video above, she strolls through Versailles in Paris, shredding the guitar with headphones on. “You lookin’ like an angel on the walls of Versailles,” she sings. “The most alive I’ve ever been.”
Olivia Rodrigo on the new song
On Instagram wrote Rodrigo: “I love this song so much!!! It’s the first chapter in the story of ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ and it makes me want to skip around and roll the windows down and make out!”
Rodrigo announced “Drop Dead” on April 7th. As in the run-up to the album announcement, she had teased the new track on Instagram and posted excerpts from it in Reels – one showed a photo of several pints of Guinness with the lyrics quote “I hope you never finish that beer”, another showed Rodrigo on a train with the line “It’s feminine intuition”.
“You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love”, called “GSIL” by her fans, will be released on June 12th via Geffen Records. It is her third album, following “Guts” (2023) and her acclaimed debut “Sour” (2021). “No matter how hard I try to write love songs, they always come out with a touch of melancholy,” Rodrigo said when announcing the new album. “I’m so proud of this album and can’t wait for you to hear it.”
Tour dates still open
Rodrigo has not yet announced any tour dates for “GSIL”. Most recently she was on the monumental Guts World Tour, which ended in August 2025 – the double album “Live at Glastonbury” documented her impressive year on the festival circuit. On May 2nd she can be seen in a double role on “Saturday Night Live”.
