Old cemetery Nieuw-Schoonebeek: born out of necessity, preserved in beauty

The emergency cemetery in Nieuw-Schoonebeek is unique. This one is probably the only one of its kind in Drenthe, and probably the Netherlands. The historical society refurbished the old cemetery in recent years.

The icing on the cake is the placement of some information panels this Saturday. Thanks to the construction of an access road, everyone is free to visit this special piece of history.

The emergency cemetery is located along the Europaweg (at number 219), near the stream valley of the Schoonebeekerdiep. Viewed from the road, it initially appears as little more than a knoll topped with strong oak trees rising into the surrounding flatter farmland.

If you look more closely, you will quickly notice the snow-white image of Sister Bernadette. As well as a stone country cross and some robust stone firebacks. Indeed, this is not a simple grove, but the final resting place of some of the first inhabitants of Nieuw-Schoonebeek.
