Surprising Findings in Breakfast Cereals: ÖKO-TEST Reveals the Hidden Risks
Many breakfast cereals, particularly fruit and berry mueslis, contain unexpectedly high levels of pesticide residues. Recent testing by ÖKO-TEST has brought alarming statistics to light: some products have multiple pesticide residues and alarmingly high sugar content. Not even organic mueslis are free from these environmental contaminants and can contribute significantly to sugar intake. How the Tests Were Conducted
In the 04/2025 edition of ÖKO-TEST, 40 different fruit and berry mueslis were scrutinized. This included 25 organic products purchased from supermarkets, discount chains like Aldi, pharmacies, and online retailers such as My Muesli. Each muesli variety tested was selected based on its higher fruit content.
The tests evaluated various parameters including sugar content, heavy metals, pesticide residues, mineral oil traces, mycotoxins, microorganisms, and the proportion of fruit. Additional factors such as packaging claims, fiber content, and misleading environmental promises were also taken into account. Unsurprisingly, excessive outer packaging in plastic containers resulted in point deductions.
Top Picks: Organic Mueslis Shine
Among the 25 organic mueslis tested, 18 received the highest rating of “very good.” These products were free from pesticide and other harmful substance residues and had low to moderate sugar levels. Notable winners for price-performance include “Ener Bio Fruit Muesli” from Rossmann, available for around two euros per 500 grams. Five other organic mueslis also gained a “good” score.
On the other hand, results for conventional products were markedly less favorable: only two mueslis achieved the “very good” rating, with the rest scoring “satisfactory” or lower. Among the conventional champions is “Crownfield Fruit Oat Muesli” from Lidl, available for €1.66 per 500 grams.
The Alarming Presence of Pesticides
Laboratory tests revealed multiple pesticide residues in many fruit mueslis. A significant concern is the insufficient understanding of how these residues may interact with each other. Frequently, contaminated raisins originate from China. Although these residues were often present in trace amounts, the multiple contaminations are cause for concern, with recent studies hinting at potential connections to diseases like Parkinson’s.
One muesli reached a staggering figure of 14 detected pesticides. Another product, “Dr. Oetker Vitalis Fruit Muesli,” was found to contain ten different pesticides. Combined with an exceptionally high sugar content, these findings led to a rating of “poor.” A total of seven fruit mueslis failed the ÖKO-TEST standards.
Mineral Oil Traces: A Hidden Danger
Since 1994, mineral oil components have been routinely tested by ÖKO-TEST, including in mueslis. In the latest tests, laboratories detected saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH), which can accumulate in fatty tissues, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, as well as aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH), some of which are potentially carcinogenic. One organic muesli was rated as “inadequate” due to MOAH content exceeding EU Commission’s recommended limits. Sources of contamination may include lubricating oils on machinery, packaging materials, or transport materials.
Sweetness Traps in Fruit Muesli
Many consumers opt for fruit mueslis with the intention of pursuing a healthy diet. However, ÖKO-TEST has shown that the sugar content in many products is often alarmingly high. While some mueslis proudly claim to be “without added sugar,” the high content of raisins, dates, or other dried fruits can mean that up to a third of the muesli comprises sugar.

For many mueslis, a single 50-gram serving can provide at least half of the daily sugar intake recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The sweetest muesli tested contained an astonishing 32 grams of sugar per 100 grams—almost a third of the total weight.
