Iran has been using the Strait of Hormuz as a deterrent for decades. The passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman accounts for 20 percent of global oil exports. Tanker shipping companies, oil companies and trading companies have already suspended shipments of crude oil, fuels and liquefied natural gas through the Strait. Prices will therefore rise. In the meantime, several major shipping companies have also decided to no longer sail through the Suez Canal.
