Official: Meppel 6 years on with mayor Richard Korteland

Finally, Korteland was allowed to address the hall himself, in which he started with a retrospective. The mayor said it was not an easy period. “It was dominated by crises. Corona, nitrogen, purchasing power. That has a huge impact. I had to make decisions that mayors almost never took. Decisions that affect residents and entrepreneurs, which not everyone agreed with. But I felt the confidence of the city council and that has been crowned with another six years tonight.”

“My thanks go to the residents. I stand here with enormous pride”, continued Korteland. “Even in difficult times, Meppelers show their best side. The ingenuity and resilience of Meppel society have really made a deep impression on me. Six years seems like a long time, but if things go as fast as the past period, I have to be careful with the blink of my eyes. Because that will pass in a moment.”

Korteland expects many tough assignments on his desk in the next six years. “Things are coming that will also affect Meppel. Groceries are becoming more expensive, taxes are going up, refugees are sleeping outside. We are short of housing and facilities are under pressure. Entrepreneurs have difficulty finding staff. But if we can meet challenges somewhere, it is in Meppel.”
