Official: Bournemouth make O’Neil head coach

Score average of 1.18

After the historic 9-0 defeat at Liverpool FC, Gary O’Neil temporarily took over Scott Parker’s fortunes at newly promoted Premier League club AFC Bournemouth at the end of August. Since then, the 39-year-old has scored 13 points in eleven league games, which corresponds to an average of 1.18. Despite four defeats in the past five games, the “Cherries” want to hold on to the native of London – what the TV station “Sky Sports“ reported the club officially confirmed on Sunday afternoon.

This article first appeared on November 27th at 12:02 p.m. and was updated after the club announced it.

O’Neil and the South Coast club agreed on a contract until 2024 with an option for a further year. Neill Blake, chief executive officer of AFC Bournemouth, said: “Gary has done an excellent job on an interim basis and the board are delighted to now take him on as head coach on a permanent basis. We’ve been impressed by his behavior since he joined the club and we think he deserves this opportunity to further develop the team and the club. Gary has worked tirelessly and diligently on the training ground and the players have responded with excellent performances and results. It was clear from the welcome he received from our fans after the Premier League win over Everton that they appreciated his efforts as well.”

Bournemouth had also reportedly held talks with former Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa in recent weeks, but subsequently declined to sign. With 16 points, the team currently ranks 14th in the Premier League table, three points ahead of a relegation zone.
