A police officer from Helmond caused a serious accident with his police car on the A67 highway near Ommel a year and a half ago. He admitted in the court in Den Bosch that he drove 209 kilometers per hour that evening. The public prosecutor demanded 120 hours of community service this Thursday. The 36-year-old man would also have to surrender his driver’s license for one year.

A woman was seriously injured in the accident on July 20, 2023. The car she was in flipped over. The driver was then thrown from the car.

What exactly happened that evening remained unknown for a long time. The police never made this public. It was clear that the driver had been shocked by something. That now turns out to be the officer: the police car overtook her that evening at a speed of 209 kilometers per hour.

The woman was so shocked by this that she pulled the steering wheel of her car and then crashed through the central reservation of the highway. The victim was taken to the hospital in Nijmegen by ambulance. The A67 was temporarily closed so that the police could investigate the cause of the accident.

Several motorists were fined 385 euros that evening because they took photos of the consequences of the accident while driving.

Community service demanded
The public prosecutor demanded community service against the man on Thursday. It was also demanded that the Helmond driver lose his driving license for another year if he commits another error in the next two years.
