Off at Bayern? Oliver Kahn downplays speculation

Oliver Kahn, CEO of FC Bayern Munich, has become the focus of criticism after the catastrophic developments at the German record champions in recent weeks. After the bitter 3-1 defeat at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday, the ex-goalkeeper downplayed speculation about his own future in Munich.

The work of Oliver Kahn is critically questioned at FC Bayern, a premature separation from the board boss after less than two years in office is quite conceivable: the rumors that were circulated by ex-professional and TV expert Jan Aage Fjörtoft spread like a wildfire. According to the Norwegian, Kahn’s exit is only “a matter of time”.

“Bild” had also speculated that the 53-year-old would “vigorate brutally” internally. Oliver Kahn is contractually bound to Bayern until the end of 2024. When asked about the explosive rumours, he then replied to the daily newspaper: “I’m not wasting a second worrying about my contract at the moment, it’s always about Bayern Munich.”

On Saturday evening, after the clear defeat in Mainz, the CEO spoke again about the speculation on “ZDF”. In doing so, Kahn tried to remove any explosiveness from the topic: “If I understood that correctly, someone sent a Twitter message and everyone else jumped on it. And then there was a hype about this topic.”

Kahn insisted that he currently had “only one goal. To get through this season with the German championship title and then attack again next season”. Of course, he conceded, a season without a single title would be “a disaster for all of us”.

At the same time, he again defended the long-controversial decision to relieve Julian Nagelsmann of his duties as head coach and to install Thomas Tuchel. “I’ve always talked about long-term goals,” said Kahn in the “Aktuelle Sportstudio”: “It wasn’t just about the goals for the season.”

As “sportschau.de” reported on Saturday before the game, Bayern are planning to continue with Kahn as CEO. Club President Herbert Hainer had previously said to “dpa” about the Causa Kahn: “No, these rumors are not true.”
