After a four-year delay, the new edition of Pink Floyd’s “Animals” album was finally released on September 16th. Nick Mason, founding member and drummer of the band, recalled the complications the group faced during the recording.

“Animals” was previously released in 1977 and is Pink Floyd’s tenth studio album. Although the reissue was remixed in 2018, the release was severely delayed due to personal conflicts between the members.

“The equipment was not that good”

In an interview with “Ultimate Classic Rock”, Mason has now commented on the process of creating the album. He explained, “I think ‘Animals’ is interesting. Of all the albums we’ve done, technically this one was maybe the most difficult for all sorts of reasons. It was recorded at the same time that punk was coming [aber auch] in our own studio that we built on a small budget. All our earlier recordings were made in Abbey Road, [wo sie] had the very highest standards. Equipment [in unserem Studio] was okay, but she wasn’t that good. In some ways that’s not a bad thing, but in other ways it justifies the remix and remaster.”

Guitar faux pas and Richard Wright tribute

He also recalled the moment he and Roger Waters accidentally deleted a guitar solo: “There was absolutely nothing that would have stopped either of us from editing a guitar solo. I remember Roger and I overseeing a guitar solo by David and accidentally erasing it… Again, that was something you wouldn’t get at Abbey Road,” he said.

In the interview, Mason also paid tribute to Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, whose talents he says were underappreciated by the other band members. He said: “[Was] as far as what Rick has brought to the band… We’ve had a feeling over the years that Rick is probably the one who never got the appreciation he might have deserved.”
