At the request of the United States and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo from Texas 7 objects from the National Collection returned. He is therefore following the advice of the Colonial Collections Committee.
Ysleta del Sur Pueblo is a nation federally recognized in the United States, which was historically colonized, first by the Spanish Empire in the 17e century. At the end of the 19e century, these objects (including a shield and musical instruments) are of great significance to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblowrongly taken to the Netherlands.
The Colonial Collections Committee has advised the minister to return these objects based on provenance research by the Wereldmuseum, in accordance with the colonial collections policy. This investigation showed that the collector of these objects used coercion, threats and bribery when acquiring objects.
This advice was drawn up in dialogue with representatives of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and is published on the Commission’s website. The transfer will take place at short notice in coordination with representatives of the United States and the United States Ysleta del Sur Pueblo.
