NVIDIA Stock and BYD Stock: BYD and NVIDIA announce collaboration on intelligent and automated driving

• DRIVE Hyperion Computing Architecture from NVIDIA aims to enable automated driving and parking

• ISO 26262 ASIL-D is intended to ensure a high safety standard

• BYD sold 600,000 electric vehicles in 2021

Cooperation is scheduled to start in 2023

The technology group and electric car manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) is planning a cooperation with the tech company NVIDIA. BYD announced this in a statement at the end of March. Cooperation will take place in the field of “intelligent driving technology”. BYD plans to use NVIDIA’s DRIVE Hyperion Computing Architecture for its new energy vehicles (NEVs) to enable automated driving and parking. The start is scheduled for the first half of 2023.

NVIDIA DRIVE Orin SoC offers a computing power of 254 TOPS

BYD sees the cooperation as an important step in the production and development of sustainable NEVs, which become increasingly intelligent through software updates. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin SoC is to be implemented in the NEVs. This is a centralized AI engine for automated driving and intelligent cockpit properties. NVIDIA DRIVE Orin SoC is the highest level of performance for automobiles and is dubbed the “AI brain” of next-generation vehicles. The technology offers a processing power of 254 TOPS (trillion operations per second), a high-speed decentralized connection and a high memory bandwidth (205GB/sec) for handling data of different sensor configurations. This should enable intelligent driving. According to BYD, the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin should achieve systematic safety standards such as ISO 26262 ASIL-D to ensure advanced intelligent driving.

2021 was a successful year for BYD

Rishi Dhall, Vice President of Automotive at NVIDIA, emphasizes that software-defined autonomy and electrification are among the driving forces behind the transformation of the auto industry. Using the power of AI and the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, BYD will deliver software-defined EV fleets that are not only safe and reliable, but also improve over time, Dhall said.

BYD is a multinational high-tech company from China, which is currently active in the automotive, electronics, new energy and rail transport sectors. The company describes itself as an advocate for sustainable development. BYD was able to sell nearly 600,000 electric passenger vehicles in 2021. In the same year, BYD achieved the highest sales of electronic passenger vehicles in China for the ninth time. The group mainly attributes its industrial technologies such as Blade Battery, the DM-i super hybrid technology and its e-platform to these successes.
