With its own laptop chips and collaborations, NVIDIA is daring to take on established chip manufacturers – a step that could reorganize competition in the consumer market.

• NVIDIA invests $5 billion in Intel shares
• The US chip manufacturer NVIDIA enters into a cooperation with MediaTek
• The new chips should be based on the Arm architecture

NVIDIA’s return to the laptop market

NVIDIA could enter the consumer market with its own laptop chips this year, the Wall Street Journal reports. A system-on-a-chip is being developed that combines CPU and GPU on one chip and can therefore also drive AI applications. While system-on-a-chip designs have long been standard in smartphones like the iPhone, they are still a rarity in PCs, it continues. NVIDIA’s new chip should also enable laptops to have similar efficiency and battery life as mobile devices – without reducing computing power. The new chips could potentially be available in laptops from Dell and Lenovo within the next few months, it said. This would be a strategic step for NVIDIA to significantly expand its value creation in the PC segment.

Cooperation with Intel for AI chips

Back in September 2025, NVIDIA announced in a press release that it would work with Intel to develop customized CPUs for data centers and end customers as well as AI infrastructure. In addition, NVIDIA NVLink will closely connect NVIDIA’s AI and high-performance computing technologies with Intel’s CPUs and the x86 ecosystem – a step that should enable new, high-performance solutions for customers.

In addition, Intel launched a strategic alliance in January 2026, which was announced by the company in September, in which NVIDIA invested around five billion US dollars and took over around four percent of Intel shares. This investment officially seals a partnership that is intended to strategically strengthen both companies in the rapidly growing market for AI infrastructure.

Partnership with MediaTek: Arm-based laptops

For its laptop chips, NVIDIA is entering into a cooperation with the Taiwanese company MediaTek, reports the Wall Street Journal. In the cooperation between NVIDIA and MediaTek, a central task will be to make the PCs usable for high-end games and other programs that were originally designed for Intel’s standard architecture, it goes on to say. In addition, the new chips would be developed on the Arm architecture and should form the basis for powerful, energy-efficient laptops.

According to the developer, the Arm architecture forms the core of one of the largest computing platform ecosystems in the world. It’s in over 325 billion devices and enables partners to develop their products efficiently, securely and cost-effectively. The manufacturer also states that the Arm architecture is used in smartphones, IoT devices and machine learning applications.

With its push into the laptop market and collaborations with Intel and MediaTek, NVIDIA is betting on powerful, AI-enabled technologies – which could indicate that the consumer market could become increasingly important to the company.
