Since 2018, the Governor has had an analysis of the number of fatal accidents in the coastal province annually. “In that year we were the worst in the class in our country. Now we see improvement, although there is still a lot of work to be done,” says Decaluwé.

The number of fatal accidents fell again in 2024. According to the governor, there are various causes for this. “There are half fewer fatal bicycle accidents and that is probably due to the bad weather. Cyclists opt for other means of transport.” In addition, according to Decaluwé, the increase in the number of traffic jams ensures that it is driven slower. The speed reduction on regional roads from 90 to 70 kilometers per hour also caused a significant decrease in the number of fatal accidents on those roads.
