Nübel missed the Champions League with Monaco

AS Monaco with the three Germans Alexander Nübel, Kevin Volland and Ismail Jakobs missed the group stage of the soccer Champions League.

The Monegasque lost 2-3 (2-2, 0-1) after extra time in the second leg of the third qualifying round at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Dutch made it into the playoffs. There Eindhoven then has to assert itself against Europa League finalist Glasgow Rangers for a ticket for the premier class. Scotland advanced on Tuesday with a 3-0 win against Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise after losing the first leg 2-0.

After goals from Guillermo Maripán (58th) and Wissam Ben Yedder (70th) and a goal by Joey Veerman (21st) in regular time, Monaco thought they were already one round ahead before Érick Gutiérrez (89th) just before the end coach Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team went into extra time. There the former Gladbacher Luuk de Jong let the PSV cheer (109th).

The Ukrainian record champions Dynamo Kyiv still have a chance of entering the Champions League. With the 2:1 (0:1, 0:1) after extra time at Sturm Graz, Kyiv is one round ahead, the club had already won the first leg 1:0.

Kyiv now face Benfica Lisbon and German coach Roger Schmidt. The Portuguese followed up a 4-1 win in the first leg with a 3-1 win at FC Midtjylland on Tuesday.
