On the land near the West-Friese Omringdijk, corn and potatoes were previously grown, and until the end of last year there was still grass. Now the earth is naked on the surface, but that will not last a long time. There must be balance in both life under and above the ground and that is a long process that is now being started.
“We are now going to sow a flower mixture first. A good place for insects that, for example, are food for skylarks or partridges, for example. In the winter it also remains. There is clover in the mixture that is then a good protein -rich food for when there is little else to be found for the birds,” says Joris Koelewijn of the spoonbill.

The foundation now has several working groups with enthusiastic volunteers who like to remain involved in the project. “We go into the field with about twenty people next weekend to do research. We are going to see how the land is doing by counting worms, for example, but we also look at life around the water and the banks, insects and birds,” Maaike explains.
