– I can say that then I was frozen.
Thus Jari Saarioa Finnish extreme rower who was in distress at sea, describes his condition at the moment of rescue.
The crew of the Cymona Eagle lifted the Saari from the sea early on Sunday.
– The hypothermia was terrible.
Saario estimates that he is feeling good at the moment. However, he plans to look for a doctor’s package as long as Cymona Eagle gets to Cape Town in a few days.
– My feet have been freezing for two months. Now they are swollen from ankle to toe, a bit like bun dough, Saario describes.
– The weight has dropped by 18 kilos, but I feel that the body will recover much faster [kuin edellisestä soutu-urakasta].
“There would be cigarettes”
A video is circulating on social media in which Saario, who has just been rescued and looks very suffering, asks for alcohol from the ship’s crew.
The alcohol dose was missed.
– This is a completely alcohol-free ship, Saario says.
– They said there would be cigarettes. Cigars are reportedly also prohibited, but normal Marlboro is allowed.
Saario refused the cigarette offer. Instead of alcohol, warmth was provided by a hot bath.
– I thought that alcohol would warm the little one from the inside. I don’t even like alcohol, raw booze, but when I got cognac or whiskey in a restaurant, I knew it would warm me up a little inside.
“nerves of steel”
While Saario, a husband and father, was fighting for his life in the middle of the South Atlantic, the family was tense at home in Finland.
– They have stayed together and been able to support, Saario praises.
– They all have nerves of steel.
Saario said that his wife’s and daughters’ stress tolerance developed during the previous rowing adventure that took them across the Atlantic twice.
– I guess they have such credit that they can get through anything now.
