Novo Nordisk will acquire a drug from Omeros to treat rare blood and kidney diseases.

The Nasdaq-listed biopharmaceutical company could receive up to $2.1 billion. Under the agreement, Novo Nordisk will have exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialize Zaltenibart, which has shown positive trial results in the treatment of an autoimmune blood disorder and has potential to treat some rare kidney diseases.

Omeros is eligible to receive upfront and near-term milestone payments of $340 million and up to a total of $2.1 billion including potential development and commercialization milestones, in addition to tiered royalties on net sales.

“Novo Nordisk is in a strong position to build on the work of Omeros, maximize the value of this asset and develop Zaltenibart into a differentiated and potentially best-in-class treatment approach for a range of rare blood and kidney diseases,” said Martin Holst Lange, Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President of Research and Development at Novo Nordisk.

In Nasdaq Nordic trading, Novo Nordisk shares temporarily gained 0.26 percent to DKK 361.60. Meanwhile, Omeros shares jumped 158.1 percent to $10.58 in NASDAQ trading.
