Novak Djokovic has won a first partial victory in the legal tug-of-war over his entry into Australia.

A court in Melbourne ruled in favor of the 34-year-old tennis star on Monday and ordered Djokovic’s release from the detention facility for people obliged to leave the country. Djokovic’s lawyers had taken action against the border guards’ cancellation of his visa after the Serb arrived on Wednesday.

However, the success does not guarantee that Djokovic as defending champion can safely participate in the Australian Open from January 17th. The Australian government has already announced that it will examine another revocation of Djokovic’s visa.

Djokovic’s lawyers had based their appeal on the fact that their client had been granted an exemption from two independent medical bodies.

Djokovic, who was not vaccinated according to court records, tested positive for the coronavirus on December 16 and “did absolutely everything” he thought was necessary to enter Australia.
