Novak Djokovic is missing a Grand Slam title for the sole record. It didn’t work out at the French Open-afterwards the tennis star was emotional.
The French Open could close a very special chapter for Novak Djokovic – at least the Serb leaves it open. After his semi-finals against Jannik Sinner, he took the time for the audience and sucked in the applause in the Roland Garros Stade.
After the 4: 6, 5: 7, 6: 7 (3: 7) against number one in the world, Djokovic explained: “That can be the last match that I have ever played here. And that’s why I was a bit more emotional in the end.” The 38-year-old seemed visibly moved.
However, there was no decision about a possible resignation. Djokovic made it clear: “I said that it could have been the last match, not that it was the last.” In this phase of his career, a year could be very long. What will come tomorrow is uncertain.
His former coach Boris Becker continues to believe in the competitiveness of the Serbs – and a return to Paris. At Eurosport he said: “I hope that Djokovic will come back to the French Open. He has to survive the year well now, but it can be the last time.” Despite the defeat against Sinner, Becker does not see the 24-time Grand Slam winner at the end: “That Djokovic lost today, okay-but you have to continue to expect him.”
Djokovic himself is already the focus of the next Grand Slam tournaments. He wanted to follow his previous plan and concentrate on the big tournaments: “I will try to stay with my plan and play the Grand Slams,” he said. He has a firm eye on Wimbledon and the US Open.
With 24 Grand Slam titles so far, Djokovic is on par with the Australian Margaret Court. Another success would make him the sole record holder.
