Nothing stands in the way of the new Alkmaar hospital: contractors sign for construction

The Noordwest Hospital Alkmaar (NWZ) has signed a construction agreement with the contractors. This allows the large new-build project, with a size of 35,000 m², finally start. This concerns the construction of the ‘acute axis’ with operating theatres, an emergency plaza with First Aid, intensive care and nursing departments for complex care.

This is the first phase of the renovation project, which is expected to result in a completely new hospital within seventeen years. The demolition of the western part of the hospital was already started in 2020. But no contractor dared it at the time start on the new construction with the budget of NWZ.

The hospital reduced the building plans and then adapted the designs. For example, the planned underground parking garage was made much smaller. Not until May this year, the NWZ managed to attract contractors to start the project.

uncertainties

Jurgen Sernee, member of the board of directors, said after the signing: “After years of planning, we are now really going to build the new acute axis. We are extremely proud of all those involved and the construction parties sitting around the table today. Especially in these times , with uncertainties in the world, we have come to a valuable collaboration.”

The construction pit has already been constructed on the site in recent months. This work will be completed by the end of this month. After that, the contractors involved will start with the first work on the new building.

Starting in January

A spokesperson for NWZ says this will be in January. “All of that is now being coordinated with the contractors involved.” The new acute axis is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

Exactly two years ago, reporter Anne Klijnstra made a report about the start of the demolition of the Alkmaar hospital, making room for the new building:
