Not in the squad against Leipzig: Kempf’s future at VfB unclear

Stuttgart (AP) – Defender Marc Oliver Kempf faces an uncertain future at VfB Stuttgart.

Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo justified the non-consideration of the 26-year-old for the game against RB Leipzig (0: 2) with “sporting reasons”. But there is also a “certain ambiguity as far as his contractual situation is concerned,” said the coach about the defender. Kempf’s contract with the Bundesliga soccer club expires in the summer. Recently there have been rumors of a change about the former U21 national player.

“Marc Oliver Kempf wasn’t in the squad today because Atakan Karazor moved in and is a more polyvalent player. Pascal Stenzel can also cover several positions,” explained Matarazzo. In the previous games, the former VfB captain Kempf had not gotten beyond the role of reservist.

It seems quite possible that Stuttgart will give up the defensive man this winter. “He’s still with us,” said Matarazzo. “If he were to leave, I will communicate appropriately why and how. That is not the case at the moment. He is with us in the team and is a full member of the squad.”
