Not a streak of blue to be seen for days. The KNMI warns with code yellow for Saturday morning due to locally dense fog. And we will still have to deal with this for the rest of the weekend. How come?

“It is indeed special,” says meteorologist Amara Onwuka on Saturday in the NPO 1 radio program N1euwsweekend. “I looked at the fog map this morning and saw fog throughout the country. That does not happen very often. This is caused by the presence of a high-pressure area. It has been above our country for a while now. A large part of Europe has been affected by this. to make.”

The high-pressure area forms a kind of imaginary lid.”

Onwuka explains: “Such a high-pressure area is associated with good weather in the summer. That is often true, because then the sun has a lot of power. There is also sometimes fog in the morning, but then the days are much longer. You can see that. Now the days are much shorter in terms of daylight. During those nights the fog can form wonderfully. Then you need 100 percent humidity and little wind.

“When you have such a high-pressure area, it forms a kind of imaginary lid. This means that the air cannot escape. The moisture is, as it were, trapped under that high-pressure area. If you then have an annoying supply of humid air, then that fog can continue to be supplied and then it will not go away very quickly. That is what we saw this week in the Netherlands and in other parts of Europe a very long period of that gloomy weather. That had to do with the same kind of high pressure area.”

“See the sun? It could be…”

Whether we will see the sun on Saturday afternoon is highly questionable, according to fellow weatherman Johnny Willemsen of Weerplaza. “It could be possible this afternoon. But it could also be disappointing. We just have to wait and see.”

If the sun breaks through, the further east in the province, the greater the chance. “If you are in the west of the province, it will probably be dark again by the time it clears.”

“Tuesday and probably part of Wednesday look good.”

According to Willemsen, such a day awaits us again on Sunday. “That day also starts off gray. There are also chances of sunshine and again: the further east, the greater the chance. With sun it will be 3 or 4 degrees. But where it is foggy, the temperature will barely rise above zero.”

And we’ll get more of the same on Monday too. “But the days after that look a bit better. Moreover, the temperature will rise during the course of next week. At the end of next week it will be around 8 degrees. We will have a greater chance of rain and wind from Thursday. Not So the weather is necessarily nice. But Tuesday and probably part of Wednesday look good.”
