North Holland badminton players Selena Piek and Robin Tabeling European champion

The Weesp Selena Piek and Robin Tabeling from Amstelveen became European champions in mixed doubles at the European Games in Krakow, Poland.

In the final, the French duo Delphine Delrue and Thom Gicquel had to be dealt with. Despite a difficult second set, Piek and Tabeling finally won convincingly: 21-10, 13-21 and 21-12.

“I am so proud, so happy,” said Piek in a first reaction afterwards at the NOS. “I really didn’t expect to win gold here after such a tough draw. There is so much Asian dominance in our sport, you hardly ever come first, so the Dutch national anthem almost never sounds. This means so much.”

Thanks to the victory, the Dutch duo retains its A status with the NOC*NSF. The duo Piek and Tabeling is currently number 11 in the world. The best 13 duos qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris next summer.
