The McLaren driver sets the fastest time in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and takes the lead. In his last qualifying in the Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton experienced a debacle.
One last little coup: McLaren driver Lando Norris has secured the final pole position of the 2024 Formula 1 season. The Brit set the fastest time in qualifying on the Yas Marina circuit on Saturday afternoon and will start the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday from first place ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri and Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz. The German Nico Hülkenberg surprisingly came in fourth place, the old and new world champion Max Verstappen ended up fifth.
For Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, it was a bitter final qualifying in the Mercedes: The seven-time world champion, who is moving to Ferrari next season, was eliminated in the first part of the qualifying and starts from 18th place.
In terms of sport, the last race weekend of the year is still about the world championship title for the constructors. In the standings, McLaren leads Ferrari by 21 points ahead of the Grand Prix on Sunday (2 p.m./Sky). Defending champion Red Bull no longer has a chance in third place. Among the drivers, Verstappen has been crowned world champion for two weeks.
