Nord Stream 2 incident: gas leak in Baltic Sea ‘danger’ for shipping | Abroad

The leakage was revealed by a sharp drop in pressure in the pipeline. An investigation is underway into the cause of the leak. A safety zone has now been formed around Bornholm because the gas can be dangerous for shipping.

The pipeline should actually be commissioned this year, but a few days before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany decided to halt the approval process. After the invasion, Germany announced that the pipeline could no longer be put into operation. Nord Stream 2 made it possible to double the amount of Russian gas to Germany.

The Nord Stream 1, which also runs between Russia and Germany via the Baltic Sea, has also been shut down for some time. According to Moscow, this is due to technical problems. Berlin says Russia is using energy as a blackmail tool because of Western support for Ukraine.

Nord Stream 2 runs for 1,230 kilometers from Russia via the Baltic Sea to Germany.
