Noga Erez has been on stage for more than 130 evenings in the last 365 days. She said the number shocked her. But she doesn’t want to take a break for a long time. The Israeli musician hasn’t been under the radar at all since her debut album “Off The Radar” (2017), instead there have been European and world tours, numerous appearances at major festivals such as Primavera, Roskilde and Lollapalooza, and the follow-up album KIDS (2021) . We met with the 32-year-old before her Berlin concert in Heimathafen Neukölln and talked about, among other things, why there are so few female producers, how she deals with her anger, and why it is so important to learn how to argue properly .

Watch the video interview here:

Together with her creative (and life) partner Ori Rousso, Noga Erez has created a sound that combines driving beats and electronic sound collages with driving rap and rap. A little bit Billie Eilish, a little bit MIAsometimes even a little Gorillaz. In her songs, the 32-year-old often sings about political world events, such as the effects of the Middle East conflict on the Israeli and Palestinian population. When Palestinians used fire kites in the Gaza Strip to burn Israeli fields and nature reserves in 2018, two years later Noga Erez sang: “We don’t need bombs we got fire kites” – who needs bombs when you can also take fire dragons. After the coronavirus pandemic brought the world to a standstill in 2020, Erez and Rousso wrote the song “NO News On TV”, a little blessing at a dark time when they wondered what the world would be like if there were no bad news: no war, no virus, no climate change.

In our conversation, Erez shows himself to be a reflective and honest person who does not shy away from confrontation. She went into therapy to address her anger issues, she explains at one point. Later, when asked how she and her partner would manage not to get on each other’s nerves seeing each other 24/7, she replies, “We can’t do it. We fight a lot.” But even if anger and sometimes even aggression play a big part in their music, hope and humor shine through just as much. “I would describe myself as an optimistic person,” she says in the interview, before yelling “I’M NOT AN ANGRY PERSON” at the camera. Being able to laugh at yourself has to be learned. Noga Erez can.
