Smit was with the Dutch team during the last international match. The AZ midfielder even made his debut in the match against Norway. Due to the absence of Smit, AZ does not supply internationals for the Dutch national team.
Only Wout Weghorst from Ajax will go to the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. At the previous World Cup, Weghorst was important with his goal in the last minute against Argentina. Former Ajax players Jurriën Timber, Brian Brobbey, Justin Kluivert, Frenkie de Jong, Jorrel Hato and Ryan Gravenberch are also in the selection.
