No stunt for futsal players in Ziggo Dome; hope for quarterfinals still alive

The Dutch futsal players did not manage to stunt tonight at the European Championship futsal. In the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, reigning world champion Portugal was 4-1 too strong. Despite the defeat, the Orange squad can still qualify for the quarter-finals.

Within six minutes, the Portuguese took the lead with an own goal from Oualid Saadouni. A hard shot went through the captain’s leg. Pany Varela doubled the deficit of the Dutch team just before half-time with a nice goal. A sporadic mistake by Orange goalkeeper Manuel Kuijk in the second half made it 3-0 and the decision in the game.

Hovocubo’s Lahcen Bouyouzan saved the honor in the rebound seven minutes before the end, after ASV Lebo’s record international Jamal El Ghannouti had hit the crossbar from a great distance. Given the game image, it was a deserved goal for the team of national coach Max Tjaden. The final chord was for Portugal. Afonso Jesus determined the final score at 4-1.

Group mate Ukraine, where Orange Wednesday of won, defeated Serbia (6-1). The Netherlands qualifies for the knockout phase of this European Championship if it beats Serbia on Friday and Portugal beats Ukraine.
