No sign of crypto winter: upcoming Ethereum merger lifts mood at Canadian blockchain conference

• Crypto event in Toronto
• Ethereum merge creates optimism
• Data protection is very important

From August 8th to 10th, the two crypto events ETHToronto and Blockchain Futurist Conference took place in Toronto, Canada. Both meetings were peppered with numerous lectures, exhibition stands, hackathons and workshops. An NFT gallery could also be visited. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who was represented with a presentation, also attended the crypto event. And even though the blockchain meetup took place at a time when the prices of the largest cryptocurrencies and the NFT market were not exactly great, there was no sign of melancholy.

Exuberant mood among crypto fans

Any uncertainties of the last few weeks, which were marked by the Terra/LUNA crash, the bankruptcy of the crypto lenders Celsius and Voyager and a general price weakness of Bitcoin & Co., seemed to have no effect on the crypto fans at the event, like ” CoinDesk” reported. “For the first time in a long time, people were inspired,” participant Greg Gopman, who is the chief marketing officer at crypto infrastructure provider Ankr, told the portal. “Maybe it was Vitalik that showed up. Maybe it was the news that the Merge is nearing reality. Or maybe it was just the beautiful indoor/outdoor venue on two perfect summer days in Toronto – but for the first time since one Things started to feel bullish for a while.”

Ethereum merge already in September

Even if the crypto market has not yet recovered from its slump in June, the Ether course has benefited from good news about the upcoming merge in the last few days. As part of the merger, the previous blockchain, which is based on the computationally intensive “Proof of Work” (PoW) process, is to be linked to a much more economical “Proof of Stake” (PoS) network. The infrastructure thus consumes 99.95 percent less energy, as the developers reported in May 2021. With the successful adaptation of the Görli test network to the PoS procedure at the beginning of August, the way has now been paved for the final merge, which is to be carried out on September 15th.

Trend topics Layer 2 and data protection

The optimism radiated by the imminent merger seemed to have extended to all visitors, according to the crypto portal. “A very optimistic audience was present in Toronto, where Layer 2 and Merge were the focus of the discussion,” said Vice President Communications Zack Gall from the investment company EOS Network Foundation. “It was great to see the level of collaboration between the different ecosystems and projects that were present.” Layer 2 solutions are projects that are based on Layer 1, i.e. the Ethereum network, but execute transactions on their own blockchains.

In addition, one of the top topics at the double event was data protection in the crypto world. Expert Warren Paul Anderson of blockchain research firm Discreet Labs explained in a speech referenced by CoinDesk that the industry suffers from the fact that all information is stored on the blockchain to meet the criterion of decentralization. Instead, one must be able to share necessary information without transmitting personal data, which is possible with zero-knowledge protocols.

The organizer is satisfied with the large number of women taking part

For the main organizer Tracy Leparulo, the two conferences were a complete success, as she revealed to “CoinDesk”. Despite the difficult market environment, participation was particularly high this year. “The largest audience at this year’s event is people within traditional capital markets,” said the head of crypto event organizer Untraceable, who has chaired the conference since 2013. Leparulo also praised the high participation of women in the event, which she described in this context as a “great inclusive area”. “So if you’re a woman in this space, come on board and get into the crypto world,” said the head of ETHToronto and the Blockchain Futurist Conference. “Anyone can do this.”
