FC Volendam hoped to stay in the match for a long time. That plan quickly came to an end, because Joey Veerman, of all people, scored in the seventh minute. The Volendammer shot flawlessly. FC Volendam was then pushed far back, but was therefore given the opportunity to break out during the transition. “If you get a small opportunity, it should be taken right away,” says Kruys.

Quality difference

With Henk Veerman, who nicely turned away from Jerdy Schouten, Volendam had a decent chance before half time. On the other hand, Ricardo Pepi scored the second of the afternoon with a beautiful bicycle kick. Guus Til made the final score 3-0 and that goal is exemplary according to Kruys. “Descotte is one toe length short and on the counterattack the 3-0 falls. That’s where you see the difference in quality between both teams.”

The trainer opted for a surprise in the line-up. Aaron Meijers was given a starting place for the first time this season. Yannick Leliendal was therefore in midfield. However, for the 38-year-old veteran it was ‘not very complicated’. “I think it’s nice to be able to play such matches,” says Meijers, who does not know whether he will retain his starting place. “That was the plan and we’ll see what happens next week.”
