No more waiting list for domestic help in Assen

Anyone who wants to use domestic help in the municipality of Assen does not have to wait long. Until recently there was a long waiting list, but that has disappeared in a month’s time.

The main reason for this is that healthcare providers have nevertheless succeeded in attracting staff. This is stated in a response from the Board to written questions from GroenLinks.

In January, the waiting list for cleaning help ran up to four months. The municipality therefore chose to abolish the language requirement, so that more employees could be hired. For example, healthcare providers started with Ukrainian employees who made the transition from cleaning to domestic help.

Despite the disappearing waiting list, the college is holding back. Experience also shows that there are large fluctuations and that it is difficult to predict. “For example, it is not certain whether the extra staff recruited by providers will actually stay. If that is not the case, there may be another waiting list within a few weeks. It is also unknown how many residents will apply for domestic help in the future.”

The number of requests for domestic help in Assen has been increasing for years. As a result, the municipality faces a backlog. At the beginning of February, more than 1,100 residents of Assen made use of this help.

According to the Social Support Act (Wmo), municipalities are responsible for supporting people who are not self-reliant. For example, domestic help or adjustments in the home can be called upon if this is not (or no longer) possible due to a disability.
