(toskanews) — The Afghan romantic-political comedy No Good Men opened the 76th Berlinalepresented out of competition at the festival’s Gala Special in Berlin. Set on background of the Taliban takeoverthe story tells of Naru, the only female cameraman on a Kabul TV, played by the Afghan director herself Shahrbanoo Sadat.
«For me it is a great honor, not only personally but for all young Afghan cinema – commented the director a Afp — we are trying to understand what it means to tell an Afghan story. For a long time our stories have been told by international directors and misrepresented. Of course I don’t deny that i Taliban are the biggest problem todaybut even in the era of democracy there was a lot of corruption.”
Since the arrival of the Taliban in 2021, filmmaking has become illegal, but thanks to technology the resistance continues. «People in Afghanistan steal my films, they end up YouTube or cut up TikTok. Even if they won’t see them in the cinema, they will still watch them on their phone.”
