During the World Cup in June and July, drones are not allowed to fly above stadiums in the American host cities on match days, the FAA reports. The ban also applies to supporter events.
Unless special permission has been granted, there is a no-fly zone around stadiums within a radius of 5.6 kilometers up to an altitude of 900 meters. For supporter events, a radius of 1.8 kilometers and a height of 300 meters applies. Violators face fines of up to $100,000, equipment confiscation and criminal charges, the FAA said.
The American security service FBI says it is involved in complying with the rules. During the tournament, the FAA will use a new enforcement system, DETER, which quickly records drone violations. At the beginning of April, Canada and Mexico, which organize the championship together with the US, announced similar rules regarding drones.
