Method Man has spoken out about the anger shown by fans following his absence from Wu-Tang Clan’s recent Australian tour dates – saying he never committed to the shows. Promoters were forced to offer refunds to ticket buyers, after four band members did not perform at the concerts.

The shows, billed as “Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber Tour,” were billed as full-cast performances. However, Method Man, Raekwon, Cappadonna and Young Dirty Bastard were not on stage at the Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney dates.

“Before we even went on the overseas tour, it was clear: I wasn’t going. I said I wasn’t going. I said I had other commitments,” Method Man explained on Instagram over the weekend (via Billboard ). The promoters would have marketed the shows as full-cast performances, even though they knew he hadn’t agreed.

Promoters acted hastily

“I’ve seen flyers that say all living members will be there… but they know I haven’t even agreed to the tour yet,” he said, describing the promoters as “overzealous.”

He continued: “Sometimes the promoters are aware of this kind of information but don’t want to give it out. They wait for tickets to go on sale and then make an announcement just before the date – I don’t think that’s fair. The only reason I’m even explaining this is because I love our fans, love Australia. But again, if I’m booked, I’m booked.”

As ROLLING STONE Australia reported, Wu-Tang announced via Instagram Stories that Method Man would not be able to perform – but the absence of the other three members was not discussed. After the Brisbane concert (March 25) and before the two remaining shows in Melbourne (March 27) and Sydney (March 28), Ticketek released a statement to fans.

Ticketek announces refunds

“We would like to inform fans that due to unforeseen circumstances, some members will be unable to attend the remaining tour dates in Melbourne and Sydney,” it said. “Wu-Tang Clan will perform and bring with them everything that has made them one of the most iconic live acts in hip-hop history.”

The Australian shows followed the European leg of Wu-Tang’s farewell tour. They toured North America last summer and were nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time last month. The tour continues May 24 in Yokohama, Japan and returns to the U.S. later this year.
