The burning pile of cars are in an outdoor area behind the company. According to the fire brigade spokesperson, this concerns a ‘large number’ of cars. These scrap cars contain many flammable substances, which release a lot of smoke. The fire brigade is now working to extinguish the fire, but also to prevent it from spreading to other cars.

Due to the smoke, an NL Alert has been sent calling on people not to come to the location. Local residents are also advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off mechanical ventilation.

According to the fire brigade spokesperson, company employees first tried to extinguish the fire themselves. They are now being checked by the ambulance to see if they have inhaled smoke. It is still unclear whether any employees have been taken to hospital.

Adjacent football club cancels training sessions

The smoke released can be seen for miles around. The adjacent football club vv De Blokkers calls on their social media not to come to the club and that all matches and training have been cancelled.

“We are now in the canteen with the windows and doors closed,” says Rick Brouwer of the football club. From the canteen he sees how the smoke first moved over the club’s fields. “But now the wind has turned in a different direction.”

The club is now in contact with the emergency services and makes their canteen available to them.

Previous fire on site

Less than a year ago also took place there a big fire scene on the site of the car scrap yard. Three adjacent homes were evacuated due to the enormous smoke. An NL-Alert was also sent in the area.
