Nkunku voted “Player of the Season”.

Christopher Nkunku from Bundesliga soccer club RB Leipzig is the “Player of the Season”. That was decided by the captains of the Bundesliga, a jury and fans in the annual survey, according to a statement on the Bundesliga website.

With 20 goals and 13 assists in 34 Bundesliga games, the 24-year-old Frenchman was second only to Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the list of top scorers and was just one of two players to have double-digit results in both ratings.

Seven goals in the Champions League, four in the Europa League and three goals and assists each on Leipzig’s way to the DFB Cup final this Saturday (8:00 p.m. / ARD, Sky) against SC Freiburg round off his record year in which he also made his debut for the French national team.

Nkunku has been at RB for three years and has developed into a world-class player there. His performances, particularly this season, drew the attention of numerous top clubs in Europe. RB boss Oliver Mintzlaff fended off all speculation about a change this summer.

In fact, after the Saxons’ renewed Champions League qualification, it looks as if Nkunku will extend his contract, which runs until June 30, 2024, with an exit clause and a considerable transfer fee.
