Nirvana’s “Something In The Way” becomes a streaming hit

Since the release of the new Batman movie The Batman on March 4th, in which Robert Pattinson takes on the role of the Dark Knight for the first time, the streaming numbers of Nirvana’s song “Something in the Way” have increased significantly.

The song first appeared on the 1991 Nirvana album Nevermind and has now appeared twice in the film. The track was also heard in the trailer. The placement helped the song make its debut on the Billboard charts in September 2020. It also peaked at #2 on Rock Digital Song Sales and #45 on September 5’s all-genre Digital Song Sales ranking.

Since the film’s release, however, the song has seen something of an explosion of streams, a report by MRC-Data reveals. In the first four days of The Batman’s release (Friday, March 4 through Monday, March 7), Something In The Way racked up 3.1 million official streams. That number is up from 372,000 official US streams over the previous four days (February 28 to March 3). That’s an increase of 734% over the specified period. Because of its steady growth, the song cracked the top five of Spotify’s Daily USA Top 50 song ranking on Tuesday.

The song’s strongest growth occurred from Sunday, March 6th to Monday, March 7th. On Sunday, it logged 808,000 streams, rising to 1.5 million the following day. That’s an increase of 86%.

The album “Nevermind” peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 for two weeks in 1992. “Nevermind” was the band’s first of four #1 albums and spawned three Billboard Hot 100 chart singles: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (#6), “Come As You Are” (#32) and “Lithium” (#64). In 2002, Nirvana re-entered the Hot 100 with “You Know You’re Right,” a previously unreleased track from 1994 that appeared on the group’s self-titled greatest hits album.
