People go to Paris to see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. But now Paris Saint-Germain has also become a kind of art form that can be seen in the city. Especially when Bayern Munich comes to visit. With a stunning 5-4 scoreline it was tight in France. The decision in the semi-finals of the Champions League will take place next week in Munich.

Suppose you are Givairo Read and you know that Bayern Munich has reserved some millions to possibly bring you from Feyenoord to Germany next summer.

You watch the match between PSG and Bayern and you see Josip Stanisic, the man in the right-back position that could one day be yours, struggling. Then you see an excellent player who, despite all his qualities and a place in the Croatian national team, is one of the least on the German side.

Do you think: there are opportunities there or do you see how a top player is doing everything he can to restrain the great Khvicha Kvaratskhelia? And how far away are you, as a young talent with basically only experience in the Premier League and not yet in the picture for the Dutch team, in your opinion? And when you see all that sprint work, how do you assess your own physicality after a season full of injuries?

Of course, if the top of the top ever really comes knocking, why hesitate? But on the other hand, the semi-final of the Champions League in Paris proved how incredibly good you have to be to be on the field at that level. You’re not just there.

Anyone who saw Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich racing across the field in Parc des Princes must have thought for a moment that these two teams should play the final. Especially because the other finalist comes from the meeting between Atlético Madrid and Arsenal. Excellent teams, of course, but much less fixated on creating, attacking and increasing the tempo until it makes you dizzy.

The best that football has to offer

PSG and Bayern Munich are simply the best football has to offer at the moment. The champions of France and Germany have never heard of withdrawing to a so-called low block, waiting or delaying. In Paris, the accelerator was pressed deeply from the very first second and was never actually released.

Chasing is the standard and all at the highest pace. The Germans opened the ball with a striking penalty from Harry Kane, who took advantage of the fact that referee Schärer punished a sliding by Willian Pacho on Luis Díaz with a penalty kick. The Englishman struck expertly: 1-0.

But PSG never panicked. And why with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the ranks. The Georgian passed Josip Stanisic inside and pushed the ball into the far corner.

A little later, little João Neves nodded in the 2-1. Paris Saint-Germain suddenly had control again. Désiré Doué was even able to make it 3-1, where Ousmane Dembélé should have scored earlier.

But with Michael Olise in the team, Bayern knows that it can always come back. The right striker struck beautifully when he was given some space. The attacker once played in the training courses of Chelsea, Manchester City and later Arsenal, but nowhere did he really gain a foothold as a player.

It worked at Reading in the Championship. Via Crystal Palace he ended up at Bayern Munich and the French national team, although he grew up in England. His 2-2 seemed to be the halftime score, but in injury time Alphonso Davies got the ball in the arm and Dembélé was allowed to score 3-2 from the spot.

After the break the whirlwind continued. Kvaratskhelia (4-2) and Dembélé (5-2, converted penalty after handball by Alphonso Davies) seemed to guide PSG to the final with many shots in the short corner next to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Watch Davies’ handball and Dembélé’s penalty kick here:

On behalf of Bayern Munich, Dayot Upamecano 5-3 and Luis Díaz (5-4) created a scoreline that will have everyone on the edge of their seats for the second leg next week.

It is already a shame that one of the two formations has to miss the final on May 30 in Budapest.
