Nine young Swiss footballers were among the 40 people killed in the Crans-Montana fire. The Swiss Football Association (SFV) announced this in a post on the X platform on the national day of mourning for the tragedy.
“We mourn and sympathize with all the victims and injured in the Crans-Montana fire disaster and with their families.
“Nine young Swiss football players from three regional French-speaking Swiss clubs also lost their lives, and several others were injured,” the association wrote on the Swiss national team’s account: “We stand by the families and clubs – today, tomorrow and even when things get quieter.”
On New Year’s Eve, 40 people were killed in the fire in the ski resort’s “Le Constellation” bar. Almost 120 were injured, most of them seriously.
Almost all of the fatalities were teenagers and young adults – the youngest were only 14 years old. In the afternoon, around 1,000 relatives and top politicians are expected at a funeral service in Martigny near Crans-Montana.
