The German Ski Association is increasing the incentives for female ski jumpers on the two-night tour. But there is another significant change.
The German Ski Association has announced a significant increase in bonuses for female ski jumpers on the two-night tour in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf. Instead of awarding non-cash prizes like last year, the winners of the qualifications will now receive 3,175 euros. This change is intended to increase the attractiveness of the event and pave the way for a possible women’s Four Hills Tournament.
Last year, the non-cash prizes awarded sparked discussions in the ski jumping scene. For her success in qualifying, Selina Freitag only received a shower cream, a shampoo and four towels. This practice led to criticism, including from Sven Hannawald, who smugly remarked that you almost have to see what you get for it on Ebay.
In addition to the premium increase, there are also changes to the two-night tour process. This time the women will start their jumping on New Year’s Eve, followed by the men’s qualification. Last year, many spectators left the jump after the men’s qualification, which caused displeasure among the female ski jumpers.
National coach Heinz Kuttin expressed the hope that this would be the last edition of the Two-Nights Tour and that the women would soon have their own Four Hills Tournament. “It would be a milestone for women’s jumping,” he said. For Katharina Schmid it will definitely be the last participation as she will end her career after this winter. She is particularly looking forward to jumping in Oberstdorf so that she can enjoy the competition again at home.
