Night of the Tip back in Wageningen, on a smaller scale | NOW

Just under twenty catering establishments in Wageningen are participating in the Night of the Tip on Saturday. “We are pleased that it is possible again in Wageningen after two difficult years,” says chair Annelijn Boot on behalf of the Wageningen department.

“In 2020 everything came to a standstill because of corona and last year only a small-scale walk was held,” says Boot. “This year we can make more progress. We will be standing all day on Saturday with a stall on the Market. We are holding a clothing market, there is a raffle and children can fish ducks. And in between we call on as many people as possible in the evenings. to visit the catering industry in Wageningen, to go out for a nice meal.”

De Nacht van de Fooi started ten years ago as a student initiative in Groningen and has since spread to other student cities. In 2017, more than 3,500 euros in tips could be transferred to the national organization.

Where about eight years ago about fifty businesses in the center of Wageningen participated, now the number will not exceed twenty. “That is a shame, but also understandable. The catering industry has gone through difficult times. We are happy with all participants, grateful that companies are willing to donate their tip or part of it that day for causes in various developing countries.”

There is also a tip jar at a few snack bars and an ice cream parlor, in which people can make a donation, says Boot.

She lists where the proceeds of the Night of the Tip go. “To a project for water resources in India and part of it goes to a university in Cambodia, where young people from poor backgrounds have the opportunity to start a study. Orphanages in Nepal are also on the list of charities and attention is paid to training for home care worker in Suriname.”

Boot hopes that she and her colleagues will ‘raise a few hundred euros anyway’. “That would be great. In the past, bands performed in several places in Wageningen. The Nacht van de Fooi had something of a festival-like atmosphere. That is not the case now. I know there is live music in café Daniels, but I don’t think so.”
