Nieuwpoort: “Trees are good for road safety”

Nieuwpoort has already taken various measures. This includes shielded bicycle paths and winged zebra crossings that already warn the motorist from afar. As a result, the number of road casualties has been reduced by 75 percent in ten years, the largest decrease in our country, but there is room for improvement. And that is why trees are now also being used.

Geert Vanden Broucke, mayor: “Trees are not only good for the climate, but also for road safety. If you have a long, straight road and you plant trees, you feel that people slow down because they have that narrowed feeling . That’s very important.”
