West Ham United parted ways with Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday. Now the successor at the club of DFB star Niclas Füllkrug has already been determined.
That happened very quickly: On Wednesday, West Ham United relieved Julen Lopetegui of his duties as head coach. Just one day later, the successor has already been chosen. It’s Graham Potter. The club announced this on Thursday.
Potter has signed a two-year contract with the Premier League club. The 49-year-old is looking forward to his new role, saying: “West Ham United is a huge club in the heart of London with a huge fan base and great support around the world.”
He added: “I’m happy to be here. It was important to me that I waited until a job that was right for me came up. I have that feeling at West Ham United.” Potter’s last engagement as a coach was over a year and a half ago. From September 2022 to April 2023 he was coach of Chelsea FC.
He previously coached Brighton (2019 to 2022) and Swansea City (2018 to 2019), among others. West Ham United are currently in 14th place in the Premier League. Recently, however, the club suffered two defeats against Liverpool (0:5) and Manchester City (1:4). DFB star Niclas Füllkrug has been part of the team since August last year.
Potter also said: “The club has made great progress in recent years and has ensured that there are some very strong foundations in place to build on. The challenge now is to leverage this foundation and take the next steps, to build a team and a club that fans can be proud of.”
