Nick Cave is working on a new album

Nick Cave has hinted at a new Bad Seeds album. The singer confirmed last year that he was planning a new record once his touring commitments were wrapped up.

On his blog “The Red Hand Files” the 65-year-old confirmed that he wants to record new songs in 2023. However, that is good news and bad news at the same time. “Good news because who doesn’t want a new Bad Seeds album? Bad news because I have to write the damn thing.”

Cave also shared that he started writing songs on January 1st. Now he has “a few things” ready, “but they are not very good”. However, he couldn’t really assess that. “It’s the same with every record. I have this familiar sense of lack, like I’m a big, dumb, empty thing in a suit,” he elaborated on his songwriting struggle. “Everything that resembles a creative impulse is buried deep down in a mossy frog hole and sleeps.”

First lyrics of the new album

Nonetheless, Nick Cave shared results from his writing process. The first lyrics are:

“Ushering in the new year he knelt down

And crushed his brothers head with a bone

its my great privilege to walk you home

In the rain. Hop inside my coat.”

A rainy day also inspired him to write more lyrics:

“The frogs in the gutter are jumping for God

Amazed of love, amazed of pain

Amazed to land back in the gutter again”

Cave then compared writing lyrics to trying to catch frogs. “That feels like it ties things together. Writing lyrics is terrifying. It’s like jumping for frogs. It actually hurts.”

The singer also writes that he hopes it won’t take long to write the songs for the album. From his experience, however, he knows that the task always takes time. That’s probably why he keeps himself covered with further information and data about the planned album.
