Since this Thursday, swimming in the Biesbosch is strongly discouraged at all seven swimming locations in the nature and recreational area. Not because of the poor water quality, but because of ‘bots hazard’: swimmers could just clash with boats, canoes and supers on the water. Defined swimming zones are not in the Biesbosch.
Because everyone shares the same space on the water, there is a risk of collisions. “This can cause dangerous situations,” says the Southeast Brabant Environment Agency. That is why from this Thursday, May 1, a negative swimming advice has been issued for all seven swimming locations in Brabantse Biesbosch, who are owned by Staatsbosbeheer. A cold splash was not a good idea here on this summer day, with temperatures that rose to 28 degrees.
“Swimming is allowed, but at your own risk.”
The negative advice is expected to apply the entire swimming season. The municipalities of Altena and Drimmelen, which have been responsible for safety at swimming locations since January 2024, do work together on solutions to create more safety for swimmers. For example, ball lines in the water are considered.
The negative swimming advice does not mean that it is forbidden to swim at one of the seven locations. The water quality is good. “But you do swimming at your own risk,” emphasizes the Environment Service.
